Chapter 1. Three Towns Association at Canterbury formed on the call of Rev. Malcolm Hill page 1, page 2,

This triangular association was formed in 1985 to develop understanding, friendship and support between the citizens of the Canterbury District, Bloomington-Normal (Illinois) in the USA and Vladimir, Russia (then the USSR). The association set out to foster cultural, educational and business links between our very different societies, leading to friendships which have lasted for decades.

The link attracted national attention in 1988 when promoting a world-first school pupil exchange with the Soviet Union. Links have since been established between academic institutions in each city. Over the years choirs, musician, folk singers, artists, photographers, dancers and sports enthusiasts have visited each others' countries. There have also been numerous exchanges or study visits by professionals and Association members, and several civic delegations have travelled between the three countries.

The Association is supported by both Canterbury City Council and its Honorary Patrons, the Lord Mayor of Canterbury and the Bishop of Dover, the Bishop in Canterbury.
